Late Edo period lacquer box or bunko bako. The gilt foliar decoration interspersed with mon for the Shimazu family, with a closure with silken cord and tassels.

Late Edo period, circa 1850

A series of 14 portraits, presumably derived from an artist's drawing book. All finely executed in pencil, and highlighted in pen and color wash on paper, now laid down. Each image of almost precisely the same size, these may at one time have been bound in a single volume.
